The New Mother

A 20-week peer support group led by a PhD level psychologist. Pregnant women and/or postpartum women who are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety are invited to attend. These women are asked to invite their partner to attend the meetings. The group is focused on the premise that women who experience such symptoms often have intense feelings of guilt and shame; thus, it is critical that these women be able to share and validate each others experiences.

Additionally, the women's partner is part of the treatment process. The partners are encouraged to talk about their experiences and feelings as well as learn about how to assist in the treatment of their loved ones. Some of the areas that will be explored in the group include:

  • Examination and modification of unrealistic expectations about delivery and motherhood.
  • Challenge myths surrounding how a mother should and should not feel about motherhood.
  • Develop techniques to help manage stress related to parenthood.
